LUNA

(UEB 3375/2)

LUNA (UEB 3375/2) is a hybrid Topaz with Golden Delicious
Origin: Institute of Experimental Botany Prague (Strizovice), CZ
Tree: Diploid, vigor and habit similar to Golden Delicious
Blossom: Mid-season, 1 day before Golden Delicious, flower set heavy, somewhat alternating as in Golden Delicious
Picking time: Early to mid October, about one week after Golden Delicious, fruit thinning is recommended, eating maturity 3 weeks after picking
Productivity: Similar to Golden Delicious
Keeping quality: In natural storage until beginning of April
Fruit: Medium, round, height : width ratio 0.90, weakly ribbed, stem thin and long, skin russet free, yellow-green becoming yellow during storage, occasionally with a slight orange blush, flesh yellowish, firm, crisp, fine grained, very juicy, wellbalanced sugar/acid ratio, sugar content 13.5 % Brix, good aromatic flavor
Diseases: Resistant to scab (Vf), moderately tolerant to powdery mildew, some mildew can occur on shoot tips, bitter pit has not been observed
Comment: The variety is considered mainly for IFP orchards but also for organic production, its growing requirements appear similar as in Golden Delicious except treatments against scab

ORION

(UEB 2718/1)

ORION (UEB 2718/1) is a hybrid Golden Delicious x Otava
Origin: Institute of Experimental Botany Prague (Strizovice), CZ
Tree: Triploid, vigorous, spreading, length of fruiting spurs medium
Blossom: Mid-season, flower set heavy and regular
Picking time: Early October with Golden Delicious, does not require fruit thinning,  most fruits hang singly, eating maturity 3 weeks after picking
Productivity: Semi-precocious, heavy and regular
Keeping quality: In natural storage until March
Fruit: Large, broad globose, height : width ratio 0,85, stem medium, fine russet spreading from stem cavity and eye basin, ground color green yellow to yellow, occasionally with a slight reddish blush, flesh yellow, firm, crisp, fine grained, very juicy, very good complex, distinctive flavor combining sweetness (Brix 16.1%) and tartness
Diseases: Resistant to scab (Vf), tolerant to powdery mildew
Comment: The variety is considered for organic production, may be suited for cooler apple producing areas, under intensive growing systems with rich nutrition may produce oversized fruits, taste very good

SIRIUS

(UEB 3177/1)

SIRIUS (UEB 3177/1) is a hybrid Golden Delicious x Topaz
Origin: Institute of Experimental Botany Prague (Strizovice), CZ
Tree: Triploid, vigorous, spreading, branching medium, fruiting spurs medium to long
Blossom: Mid-season, slightly before Golden Delicious, flower set medium, regular
Picking time: Towards mid-October, about 10 days after Golden Delicious, fruits hang mostly singly without thinning
Productivity: Precocious, produces regular good crops
Keeping quality: In natural storage until April, eating maturity 4 weeks after picking
Fruit: Medium to large, round, height : width ratio 0,92, stem long and medium thick, some fine russet may be present in the stem cavity, ground color green yellow to yellow, occasionally with a slight reddish blush, flesh yellow, firm, crisp, fine grained, very juicy, well balanced sugar (14,7 % Brix) and acid level, rich flavour
Diseases: Resistant to scab (Vf), tolerant to powdery mildew, absence of bitter pit
Comment: The variety can be considered for organic production as well as for IFP systems, growing requirements seem to be similar to Jonagold except treatments against scab, nice appearance, very interesting variety with many good qualities

ROZELA

(UEB 3322/5)

ROZELA (UEB 3322/5) was produced by crossing Vanda with Bohemia
Origin: Institute of Experimental Botany Prague (Strizovice), CZ
Tree: Diploid, spreading growth habit with weak to medium vigorous, produces many fruiting spurs
Blossom: Early to mid-season, flowers heavily and regularly
Picking time: End September, about one week before Golden Delicious, eating maturity         2 weeks after picking
Productivity: Precocious, annual producer of heavy crops
Keeping quality: In natural storage until March
Fruit: Medium to large, round to flat-round, slightly irregularly ribbed in the eye basin, attains 90 % attractive red blush over yellow groundcolour, appears russet free. Prominent lenticels, stem medium, flesh yellowish, medium firm, crisp, juicy, sweet with little acid, good aromatic flavour
Diseases: Resistant to scab (Vf), tolerant to mildew
Comment: Grower-friendly variety for organic fruit production with an intensive growing system, appears to be better adapted to cooler apple producing areas

RED TOPAZ

RED TOPAZ is a mutation of the variety Topaz
Origin: Institute of Experimental Botany Prague (Strizovice), CZ
Tree: Diploid, moderately vigorous, upright to spreading, produces many fruiting spurs
Blossom: Mid-season, flowers heavily also on one year old wood
Picking time: End September, several days before Golden Delicious, fruits hold on tree well, eating maturity after one month of storage
Productivity: Precocious in bearing, cropping is heavy and regular
Keeping quality: In natural storage until March
Fruit: Medium flat globose, has blushed bright red skin with nearly 100 % of the fruit surface colored, slight russet in stem cavity, flesh yellowish, firm, crisp, very juicy with very good taste
Diseases: Has resistance Vf to scab, low susceptibility to mildew, can be susceptible to fire blight
Comment: Differs from the initial variety Topaz, in red fruit coloration which develops about 10 days earlier as a blush washed over almost whole fruit surface, this can be an advantage in warm, dry areas where the red coloration of Topaz appears too late and / or is too weak
